Every year, thousands of people develop some form of skin cancer. Most of these cancers need not have happened. Sensible precautions against sun exposure taken early in life could have prevented them. But most important, most of these skin cancers can be cured if treated in time.

Skin cancer is a malignant condition that begins with the excessive, uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one of the layers of the skin.

The signs of skin cancer are:

bulletA skin growth that increases in size and appears
pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black or multicolored.
bulletA mole, birthmark or beauty mark that changes
color, increases in size or thickness, changes in
texture, or is irregular in outline.
bulletA spot or growth that continues to itch, hurt, crust,
scab, erode or bleed.
bulletAn open sore or wound on the skin that does not
heal or persists for more than four weeks, or heals
and then reopens.

There are a variety of treatment options for skin cancer, ranging from laser destruction to surgical excision, combined with any necessary surgical reconstruction. Most early skin cancers can be excised and the area closed under a local anesthetic. Larger and unusual skin cancers might require a larger surgical procedure in the hospital and different forms of treatment.

Being a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Taylor is experienced and capable of performing appropriate and necessary reconstructive procedures at the same time your cancer is removed, which eliminates the need for two or more surgeries. Although Dr. Taylor does not participate in all insurance plans or accept the fees from all insurance plans, the office will help file the claim and most insurance coverage will pay for part of the cancer treatment. He will be happy to evaluate your condition, provide treatment recommendations, and answer any questions you may have during a consultation appointment.
