Laser skin resurfacing is an exciting medical use of lasers
by Dr. Taylor, which helps to correct the effects of the sun, time, and disease. Lasers
and Dr. Taylors experience in the treatment of the skin with lasers, provide a level
of control and effectiveness that is difficult to achieve with skin rejuvenation
techniques or chemicals applied to the skin.
As we go through life our skin is exposed to numerous
experiences that vary from childhood chicken pox to acne to chronic sun exposure. These
experiences, as well as time, heredity, and gravity, create scars, fine lines, and
wrinkles, especially around the mouth and eyes. Laser Skin Resurfacing is a method to
remove and to reduce these lines, wrinkles, and scars. The laser uses a very high energy
beam of light to vaporize scarred, lined, and wrinkled skin. The laser is easier to
control than the old chemical peels that were done with acids and phenol. Although nothing
is perfect, the laser penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, when used by an
experienced laser surgeon, making the procedure safer and more predictable, reducing the
risks of scarring and pigmentation changes.
The
laser resurfacing treatment can usually be done in the office with a local anesthetic,
unless large areas are treated. After the skin is cleaned and anesthetized, the areas are
treated with the laser to remove the outer layers of skin and to smooth down rough areas
or scars.
Immediately following treatment a special dressing or topical ointment is usually applied.
In the first few days following treatment, your skin will have open areas, similar to a
scraped knee, while new skin is being formed. There may be some crusting. Thick ointments
are applied for the first few days.
After 4-10 days the areas are usually completely healed with new, pink skin. These areas
can be covered with makeup once they are healed, and the pink skin usually fades over the
next several weeks. The final effect of the treatment develops over the next few months
and usually lasts for several years.
Prices
vary as to the size and location of the area treated. Most areas, such as around the
mouth, can be treated for $750-1,100.00.
