The History of the Future
Dr. Taylor feels that the future of breast reconstruction is using the patient’s own fat and stem cells.
Since the first days of his practice, Dr. Taylor has performed breast reconstruction using all the known methods, including breast tissue expanders, implants, and “flaps.” He and a colleague performed the first lower abdominal (TRAM) “flap” procedure in San Antonio using the patient’s own lower abdominal skin and muscle tissues for a bilateral breast reconstruction at one surgery.
Dr. Taylor no longer “accepts insurance” for payment and is not on any insurance panels, IPOs, HMOs, PPOs, or other insurance companies’ networks. As such, he accepts payment by the patient up front and will help the patient to fill out the basics for the insurance forms.
Fat tissue is your adipose tissue. Since the 1990s Dr. Sydney Coleman from New York promoted a standard method of fat grafting, which has been copied and used successfully all over the world by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons. Because of the development of the “Coleman” method the patient’s own adipose tissues can be used safely for cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in all areas of the body. As an example, most people have heard of fat grafts and injections into the buttocks (Brazilian Lift).
Dr. Taylor has spent time receiving additional training in fat and stem cell injections and the use of the BRAVA® breast enhancement system. It is used by patients for breast augmentation and reconstruction. Although the BRAVA device has been available for years for women to use as a non-surgical method to enlarge the breasts, Dr. Taylor feels it is now the method of choice to prepare the breast tissues for fat grafts and stem cell injections.
In a woman that has had her breast removed due to breast cancer or undergone previous reconstructive surgeries, fat and stem cell injections can be used to correct the defects and deformities. The BRAVA® device is used in this process. The BRAVA® device is worn for approximately 90 days consistently by the patient to stretch the tissues and to prepare the tissues for the fat/stem cell injections. The device does this by stimulating the tissues to develop new blood vessels and nerves, and this helps to lay the groundwork to improve fat graft survival and stem cell survival. Dr. Biggs from Houston states, “To prepare the field for the planting of the seeds.”
Liposuction is then performed on other body areas, the fat is processed, and then the fat and stem cells injected into the expanded tissues to create a new breast or to improve the appearance of any breast defects. For breast reconstruction this process has to be repeated and several surgeries need to be performed.
