Despite its popularity as a technique for the removal of unwanted body hair, many people remain unaware of what is involved in a laser hair removal treatment. This short article will provide an overview of how such treatments are carried out at LaserAway – one of Southern California’s leading skin care centers – by our hair removal and aesthetics experts
When you visit LaserAway for your free initial consultation, our staff members will obtain a medical history from you and then examine a small sample of your hair to determine the type of laser to be used and the best power settings that will maximize hair destruction with the least potential for your discomfort during and after the procedure. After answering any questions that you may have, your laser hair removal treatment will be scheduled.
On the day of your scheduled laser treatment you will be taken to one of the treatment rooms and placed in a comfortable position that allows ready access to the area from which hair is to be removed. Since the laser can produce a slight burning sensation in the skin as the hair is being destroyed, a topical anesthetic is usually applied to the area that will be treated. You will also be given special goggles to wear to protect your eyes from accidental exposure to light from the laser while it is being used.
During the treatment itself you may experience a mild burning or pricking sensation while the laser is in operation. The vast majority of our patents say that these sensations are no worse than a mosquito bite or some other natural irritation. To further promote your comfort during the procedure, the laser is fitted with a special device that cools the skin before and after each section of skin is exposed to the laser. At the conclusion of your laser treatment, a moisturizing or similar cream is applied and you will be ready to return home.
In most cases, you may return to your normal activities immediately after your treatment although our laser clinicians will suggest that you avoid strenuous activity that involves the treated area for at least 24 hours. It is not uncommon for redness or slight swelling of the treated area to occur after treatment, but this usually subsides after a few days and any symptoms are easily controlled with moisturizing creams.
