There’s no denying it – cosmetic procedures have been on the rise since 2012. The Huffington Post recently reported that according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures have reached an all-time high in the last few years. People have been shelling out big bucks to look younger. Their procedure of choice? Anything from Botox to dermal fillers, lasers, and microdermabrasion.
A few statistics to put these findings in perspective: Botox injections increased by 8 percent, with some 6.1 million procedures performed last year. Microdermabrasion procedures also had increased by 8 percent in 2013, while soft tissue fillers and chemical peels saw a 5 and 2 percent increase, respectively.
The rise in demand for plastic surgery is at least partly a response to the way it is advertised and portrayed in the media. Stars like Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Aniston, and Courtney Cox have all stated that they rely on Botox and dermal fillers to keep them looking radiant and youthful. Why shouldn’t the average woman do the same?
Commonly performed cosmetic procedures:
Dermabrasion is a technique that uses a wire brush or a diamond wheel with rough edges to remove the upper layers of the skin. It is most often used to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and lines around the mouth.
IPL Laser Treatment
Treatment with intense pulsed light can remove skin pigmentation problems such as birthmarks or age spots. The light is applied to the skin’s surface to change melanin, making it less visible.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal often uses a low-energy laser beam that passes through the skin and down the hair shaft, effectively disabling hair growth. Patients may experience slight redness of the skin or mild swelling around the hair. Patients with darker skin may not respond well to laser hair removal.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm are used to treat wrinkles and general facial aging. The compound is injected into the skin, and the results last for three months in “high mobility” areas such as the lips and up to a year for “smile lines” around the nose.
This class of injections use botulinum, a neurotoxin that blocks nerve signals to temporarily weaken or paralyze the muscles causing wrinkles.
Microdermabrasion, a milder form of dermabrasion, removes crow’s feet, age spots, and acne scars through a mechanical handpiece. Microdermabrasion stimulates new cell growth and collagen production. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there are no side effects.
