  • How Long do Dermal Fillers Last?

Myth: Dermal Fillers Only Last Three Months

Wrong! Not all dermal fillers last three months. Many last way longer, depending on which one you’re using. We’ll review a few of the most popular dermal fillers, along with how long each one lasts.

    A World of Choice

Radiesse is a new generation dermal filler that acts differently than many other dermal fillers. It’s a safer and longer-lasting treatment that fills and corrects smile lines, nasolabial folds, wrinkles around the nose and mouth, and sunken areas below the eyes.

Radiesse is made of tiny calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. The calcium microspheres are similar to minerals found naturally in the body so allergy testing isn’t required. Over time, the body absorbs the microspheres and gel, leaving behind only natural collagen.

Radiesse has been proven to last up to one year. If you get a touch up every three months or so, this treatment can last about two years. However, results will vary by patient, and if the dermal filler is injected improperly, it can’t be reversed.

Cosmoderm is the first FDA-approved human collagen filler made commercially available. It is purified from human dermal cells and is used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, frown lines, cheek depressions, and deep smile lines. Human collagen is the dermal filler that is closest to what is normally found in the skin, meaning no allergy tests are necessary.

Because collagen injections like Cosmoderm aren’t synthetic, they tend to break down quickly. Results usually only last three months.

Juvéderm XC and Juvéderm Voluma XC are injectable fillers made from hyaluronic acid. As you age, your skin loses some of its hyaluronic acid, a process that is sped up if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun. Juvéderm restores the skin’s volume and smooths away facial wrinkles and folds, including those around the mouth, nose, and forehead. Juvéderm XC is used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles around the nose and mouth while Juvéderm Voluma XC adds volume to cheeks. Hyaluronic acid injections, like Juvéderm, stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that contribute to the skin’s fullness and elasticity.

Juvéderm XC results last 9 to 12 months, and Juvéderm Voluma can add volume for up to two years.

Sculptra is an injectable filler that replaces lost collagen over time to give you a more natural-looking appearance. It works to target the underlying causes of the signs of aging, such as collagen loss. Sculptra works gradually in a series of treatments, typically three injection sessions over a period of a few months. Sculptra is made of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which works to replace lost collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid is absorbed naturally by the body and has been used for years in dissolvable stitches. Sculptra treats three areas, including deep folds between the nose and mouth, the lines framing the mouth, and chin wrinkles.

A full treatment of Sculptra injections requires on average three injection sessions over a few months. They can last for more than two years.

Botox is a revolutionary prescription medication that improves moderate to severe frown lines, forehead furrows, smoker’s lines, and crow’s feet. More specifically, Botox is a neurotoxin and works by attaching itself to nerve endings. Once this happens, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions, called acetylcholine, can’t be released. To put it more simply, Botox injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles. This is also why wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity don’t respond to Botox treatments.

Since Botox works by weakening facial muscles, full results are generally seen within five to seven days. You’ll see deep dynamic wrinkles gradually improve over time, in addition to the early effects seen shortly after treatment. Your results will continue to improve, until about two weeks after the procedure. At that time, you’ll be looking your best. The effects of Botox will gradually wear off over the next four to six months, and the wrinkles will need to retreat.
