Does Botox Prevent Wrinkles Over Time?
I heard Botox can prevent new wrinkles from forming. Is this true?
Using Botox To Prevent Wrinkles
Yes, surprisingly. Most doctors agree it’s never too early to start a preventative skincare regimen. Frown lines, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet are due to repetitive folding of the skin caused by facial expressions we make every day. Most older folks try to fix these wrinkles and fold only once they’ve developed. But by taking action earlier, people can keep them from ever happening. That’s because if you slow down the use of these facial muscles beginning early in adult life, the lines and folds never get a chance to develop. But how exactly does Botox prevent these wrinkles from forming in the first place?
Botox Injections To Prevent Wrinkles & Lines
Botox is a highly purified toxin that can temporarily erase or reduce horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet. It works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer the contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. How? The injections slow muscles that contract hundreds of times a day, eventually etching lines in the skin. They can also lift the corners of the mouth that sag with age, eliminate the “pincushion” look that develops in some chins, soften the smoker’s lines around the mouth and soften vertical neck cords.
There’s a catch, though: Botox is only effective in preventing the formation of dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by the contraction of muscles that are attached to the overlying skin. Dynamic wrinkles include crow’s feet, smoker’s lines, frown lines, and necklines. Botox can’t prevent static wrinkles from forming, or wrinkles that are due to lack of elasticity of the skin caused by sun damage, smoking, genetics, or poor nutrition.
Get a Head Start on Anti-Aging
When should you start getting Botox injections? Most experts agree that you should use Botox as a preventative measure starting in your late 20s and early 30s. Combining a proactive approach in treating and preventing wrinkles with good skincare, sunscreen, and a healthy lifestyle should prevent most wrinkles from forming. It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin.
Six to eight injections administered into the underlying muscles
What can you expect during your first Botox procedure? You’ll generally receive a consultation beforehand to determine the best treatment for your needs. Once you begin the actual treatment, a topical numbing gel will be applied fifteen minutes prior. Six to eight injections administered into the underlying muscles will follow. Most people say that the injections feel similar to getting vaccinated – that is, they feel only a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site. A few hours afterward, the injection site may look red and feel irritated.
Immediately following the injections, you’ll be required to contract the treated muscles. Your physician will ask you to frown, raise your eyebrows and smile, and pucker your lips. It may sound silly, but this helps to evenly distribute the Botox throughout the injection site. Your physician will also tell you to refrain from exercising, bending over, lying down, or rubbing the area for the first 24-48 hours after treatment. This ensures that the Botox settles in the right place and doesn’t migrate elsewhere.
