The season of gentle snowfall can be rough on your skin. These four homemade remedies ease the skin redness and dryness that come with winter:
Shea Butter Body Lotion
Infused with shea butter and almond oil, this body lotion is ultra-hydrating. Use it frequently throughout the day to prevent your skin from becoming too dry.
Ingredients: 1/2 cup shea butter, two tablespoons almond oil, 10 drops lavender oil
Instructions: Using a double boiler (you can create your own by resting a stainless steel or glass bowl in a saucepan of water), melt the shea butter and blend it with the almond oil. After heating, place the bowl in a fridge to cool for 15 minutes. You want the mixture to start to solidify and become translucent, but you don’t want it to be fully hardened; if it does, you’ll have to start all over again. Remove the bowl from the fridge and add the lavender oil. Using a hand mixer, mix until creamy and transfer to a jar.
Harsh winter weather can easily dry out your face, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. This all-natural facial moisturizer prevents that, though; it’s infused with soothing aloe vera gel and rich coconut oil.
Ingredients: one cup aloe vera gel, one ounce beeswax, 1/4 cup almond oil, and 1/4 cup coconut oil
Instructions: Using a chocolate melter, melt the beeswax and coconut oil in the almond oil. Then pour the melted oils in a blender and let cool before you start blending (this usually takes about 90 minutes). Then begin blending the oils as you slowly pour the aloe vera gel in the blender as it whips. The mixture should be light and fluffy. Store in a small jar and you’re done. Apply this moisturizer to your face in the morning and at night.
Exposed to harsh elements all year, hands take an extra beating in winter. Keep your hands silky soft with this all-natural DIY hand cream that’s infused with sweet almond oil.
Ingredients: 1/4 cup shea butter, 1/8 cup sweet almond oil, one tablespoon beeswax, ten drops essential oil of your choice
Instructions: Using a double boiler, melt the shea butter, beeswax, and sweet almond oil together. Be sure to stir the mixture continually as it melts. Once the mixture is completely melted, remove it from the heat and allow to cool for ten minutes. Stir in peppermint oil, lavender oil, or another essential oil of your choice. Pour the liquid hand cream in a small glass jar and allow it to harden for several hours. Apply this cream to your hands as often as needed.
Moisturizing Lip Balm
Your lips quickly become cracked and dry when exposed to winter weather. This all natural ultra-emollient lip balm will keep your lips soft and supple.
Ingredients: four grams beeswax, five grams shea butter, three grams cocoa butter, four grams olive oil, four grams avocado oil, a few drops of vitamin E and peppermint oil
Instructions: Weigh all the ingredients except the vitamin E and peppermint oils in a heat-resistant glass measuring cup. Then place the cup in a pot of simmering water to melt the oils. Stir in the essential oil and vitamin E. Pour the melted lip balm into four or five lip balm tubes and let cool.
