Changing jobs can be tough, even if you have an impressive resume. This is because many employers favor more youthful and attractive-looking job candidates. In fact, research has shown that the more attractive and youthful you appear, the likelier you are to get hired for a position. And you’ll get paid more for it, to boot.
In other words, looking your age can hurt your job chances.
But it doesn’t have to. Botox can give you an edge. It shave years off your appearance in no time at all. It’s affordable, noninvasive, temporary, and highly effective. What’s more, it produces few side effects.
Unlike other treatments, Botox is especially effective on dynamic wrinkles — crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead furrow lines, and smoker’s lines — which appear when you use your facial muscles to make expressions.
How Botox Works
A neuromodulator, Botox erases dynamic fine lines and wrinkles by attaching itself to nerve endings. This blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions. Your facial muscles relax, causing dynamic wrinkles to fade.
Is Botox for You?
It most likely is. The number of men undergoing Botox treatments has gone up by more than 200 percent over the last 16 years.
That Botox will freeze your face is a misconception. A skilled, experienced medical provider can make the treatment quite natural-looking.
Safe and effective on all types of skin tones, Botox is right for almost anyone. Yet you might not be an ideal candidate if you have a history of neuromuscular disease, deep scars, skin disorders, or facial asymmetry. And if you’re looking for a more dramatic or permanent change in your appearance, then you should look to other treatments.
The key to a successful Botox treatment is choosing your medical provider with care. Research medical providers who are board certified and specialize in facial anatomy. You should also get more than one Botox consultation so you can make an informed decision.
Most importantly, your Botox provider should be aware of the differences between male and female faces. Men have flatter faces than women. This means your provider should avoid filling any deep skin crevices and increasing lost volume, because doing so can feminize your appearance.
Another anatomical factor that influences Botox treatments is baldness. A balding man can have lines that appear much higher on his face than if he were a woman. This requires that your Botox provider adjust the treatment area accordingly.
Your First Botox Procedure
Ten days before your Botox treatment you must discontinue use of any products that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E, because they can cause you to bruise.
Before your first Botox treatment, you’ll receive a consultation to determine the best treatment for your needs.
On the day of your treatment you may receive a topical numbing gel 15 minutes before your injections are to start. Depending on the areas you’re planning on having treated, anywhere from six to eight injections will be made. Most clients comment that the injections feel similar to getting vaccinated: They feel a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site. After your Botox injections are finished, you might notice that the injection sites look red and feel irritated. This is temporary, and it usually goes away within a few hours.
Immediately after your injections, you’ll need to contract the treated muscles. You might be asked to frown, raise your eyebrows, smile, and pucker your lips. Contracting the treated muscles helps to evenly distribute the Botox throughout the injection site.
You’ll also be required to refrain from exercising, bending over, lying down, or rubbing the area for the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Doing so ensures that the Botox settles in the right place, and that it doesn’t migrate elsewhere. Otherwise, you might experience facial paralysis and your eyelids may droop.
Botox Gets the Job Done
The full effects of Botox take a few days. Sometimes they can take up to two weeks. Everyone’s different.
Botox’s effects fade with time, generally lasting between two and four months. Most physicians recommend that you get retreated with Botox before your wrinkles fully return.
Over time, Botox trains your facial muscles to relax. You’ll then need fewer treatments.
Other Career-Transition Tips
Along with getting Botox you should following this smart advice if you want to transition to a new career:
- Before jumping into a totally new field, ask yourself why you want a change in your career, and whether it’s a new career you want or just a new job. Also consider whether you’re just running away from a boss you don’t like.
- Identify your strengths and how they will apply to the new career you have in mind.
- Develop a plan by establishing timelines, possible companies or organizations, and the skills and experience you’ll need to make your transition a smooth one.
- Try out the career first by taking a part-time position in the new industry. See if you can reduce your hours at your current job, and slowly transition into the new one. Volunteering is also another option to get a feel for your new career.
- Be realistic. Remember that it probably took you a long time to get where you’re at in your current career. Starting over is never easy, and there will be a learning curve. Be sure you have some funds to cover the loss of income that will come from transitioning into a new career.
