  • Mythbusters: Is Botox Extremely Painful?

Don’t worry – Botox injections aren’t extremely painful. We understand your anxiety, though. It’s never fun having needles inserted into your face. Still, you haven’t much to worry about. Most patients receive a topical numbing agent on the area being injected prior to receiving Botox injections. And if you’re extremely anxious, sometimes the dermatologist will give you an anti-anxiety pill, such as Valium, before the treatment – but this is normally not necessary.

Of course, you’re always welcome to close your eyes, too, during the procedure if you’re that nervous. Dermatologists always try to make sure their patients are as comfortable as possible.

    The Finer Points

botox injection needleSpecifically with Botox injections, dermatologists use a tiny special needle so that the injections are not uncomfortable. Although you might feel some pressure as the needle is inserted (and sometimes a stinging sensation), the pain is very mild, if even that. Most people say that Botox injections, for instance, feel like getting a vaccination – that is, they only feel a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site.

Keep in mind that you should stop using any aspirin products up to a week before a Botox treatment because they are blood thinners. Discontinuing the use of aspirin the week before will help to keep bruising down. Patients should also discontinue taking fish oils a week beforehand because they also promote bruising.

you won’t feel much pain other than a slight stinging sensation or pressure as the needle is going into the injection site.

You’re probably also wondering what to expect during a Botox treatment. You’ll generally receive a consultation beforehand to determine the best treatment for your needs. And when you do undergo the treatment, a topical numbing gel will be applied fifteen minutes prior. Six to eight injections are then administered into the underlying muscles. As mentioned before, you won’t feel much pain other than a slight stinging sensation or pressure as the needle is going into the injection site. A few hours afterwards, the injection site may look red and feel irritated, but this is only temporary.

Immediately following the injections, you’ll be required to contract the treated muscles. Your dermatologist may ask you to frown, raise your eyebrows and smile and pucker your lips. It sounds strange, but this helps to evenly distribute the Botox throughout the injection site. You won’t be able to lower your head for the two hours following a Botox treatment, meaning no yoga, no bending over, no blow drying your hair, and no napping. This ensures that the Botox settles in the right place. Ignoring this advice could result in Botox migrating to other parts of your face, leading to facial drooping and paralysis of functional neighboring muscles. It can take up to seven days to achieve the full effect of Botox, and results typically last around four months—but these results vary depending on the depth of your wrinkles.

    The Serious Stuff

botox bruiseNow that you know Botox is relatively painless, you probably want to know if there are any serious complications. Don’t worry – complications from Botox are relatively rare. The most common side effect of Botox injections is temporary bruising, followed by headaches lasting up to 48 hours. Eyelid drooping can also occur, and but it usually subsides within three weeks. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding or who suffer from neurological disorders can’t undergo Botox injections. But don’t let these potential complications scare you – the best part about undergoing Botox is that it’s quick, extremely safe and virtually painless.
