Myth: Botox and dermal fillers are the same.
Botox vs Dermal Fillers
Botox is a prescription medication that essentially relaxes the underlying facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and smoker’s lines. To be more scientific, it’s a neurotoxin that works by attaching itself to nerve endings. Once this happens, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions—acetylcholine—can’t be released. To put it more simply, Botox injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles. This is also why wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity don’t respond to Botox treatments.
Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm, on the other hand, eliminate static wrinkles by adding volume to the skin. Juvéderm in particular is comprised of a smooth hyaluronic acid gel that when injected into the skin smooths wrinkles and folds. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found in the human body. Its primary function is to bind and absorb water, creating volume in the face. During the natural aging process, hyaluronic acid found in the body diminishes. The result? Those annoying lines and folds. Juvéderm corrects this by restoring hyaluronic acid in the skin, helping to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
Botox or Juvéderm? Which One Is Right for You?
That all depends on whether you have dynamic or static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are those wrinkles and lines that appear when your face is animated. Areas on your face most prone to dynamic wrinkles are those that are located where your muscles are most active. These tend to be across the forehead (frowning and surprised expressions), between the eyebrows (frowning), and at the outer corners of the eyes (squinting, smiling, laughing, and frowning). The area around your eyes is particularly vulnerable to dynamic wrinkles because not only do we constantly use our eyes, the skin there is far thinner and sensitive than the rest of your face. Dynamic wrinkles are almost always treated with Botox.
Static wrinkles are the result of the natural disintegration of essential components in the skin that are responsible for maintaining structural integrity.
Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are those facial lines that are evident even when our face is at rest. Thus they are constantly visible. Basically, any wrinkles or creases that are visible, even when your face is absolutely neutral and at rest, are considered static. Static wrinkles are the result of the natural disintegration of essential components in the skin that are responsible for maintaining structural integrity. These include collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, and all deplete with aging. Environmental factors such as UV exposure can accelerate disintegration. Neglected dynamic wrinkles left on their own eventually become static wrinkles. Static wrinkles respond best to dermal fillers such as Juvéderm.
