Question: I read somewhere that Botox can help with excessive underarm sweating. Is this true?
Yes, it is. Heavy underarm sweating is a very real and embarrassing problem. Happily, effective treatments exist—namely, Botox.
Excessive sweating can affect your entire body or just your palms, soles, underarms or face. How do you know if you are sweating too much? Excessive sweating is usually defined as sweating an amount out of proportion with the temperature of a room or your activity level. Besides disrupting normal daily activities, excessive sweating can cause social anxiety or embarrassment.
Excessive sweating can be caused by a variety of different factors:
- Excessive sweating that affects large areas of the body and that occurs while you’re awake and asleep is likely a side effect of a drug or a sign of a disease or condition, such as menopause hot flashes, anxiety or overactive thyroid.
- Excessive daytime sweating of the palms, soles and underarms for no apparent reason is known as focal hyperhidrosis. This type of excessive sweating typically stops when you’re sleeping and isn’t associated with an underlying condition.
Stop Sweating with Botox
Botox treatments help control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when topical medicines do not work well enough. How does it work? By temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, severe sweating stops. Botox injections are expected to temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated areas only. Sweat continues to be produced elsewhere.
You’ll have to take certain precautions before undergoing a Botox treatment. Ten days before receiving Botox injections, you’ll be asked to refrain from taking products that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E – doing so will significantly reduce the chance of bruising following treatment.
But don’t let these precautions scare you. The best part about undergoing Botox is that it’s quick and painless. You’ll generally receive a consultation beforehand to determine the best treatment for your specific sweating needs. And when you do undergo a treatment, a topical numbing gel will be applied fifteen minutes prior. Six to eight injections will be administered into the underlying muscles in your armpit. Most people say that the injections feel similar to getting vaccinated – that is, they feel only a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site. A few hours afterwards, the injection site may look red and feel irritated.
Immediately following the injections, you’ll be required to contract the treated muscles. It sounds silly, but this helps to evenly distribute the Botox throughout the injection site. Your physician will also tell you to refrain from exercising, bending over, lying down or rubbing the area for the first 24-48 hours after treatment. This ensures that the Botox settles in the right place and doesn’t migrate elsewhere. Failure to do so can potentially result in muscle paralysis.
The Most Effective Treatment
Botox treatments to combat excessive sweating are so effective that 57 out of 104 patients treated with Botox achieved an effective response, compared to only 6 out of 108 treated without Botox. What’s more, 84 out of 104 patients treated with Botox achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating, compared to only 44 out of 108 treated without Botox.
