  • Women Wage War on Aging with Botox

Experts agree that prevention is key to aging gracefully. Using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, moisturizing regularly—they all help. But for a lot of women, it’s too late. The damage has already been done. Years of basking in the sun have left many women with sun damage, including fine lines and wrinkles. That’s why more and more women are willing to try minimally invasive procedures such as Botox, which smooths lines and wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.

The Kansas City Star recently reported on this phenomenon. The reporter interviewed a family practitioner in Wichita who commented on how the procedures don’t seem so taboo anymore. She herself looks at Botox as just another beauty routine, one that is not that different from getting highlights from a hairstylist.

The article reports that Botox is fairly inexpensive as well – it runs from $10 to $13 per unit, and practitioners typically use 10 to 12 units on a patient. (Other providers, however, may use as much as 40 to 50 units.) The differences in units are attributed to the amount of saline mixed with the Botox, which actually arrives in powder form.

The Wichita practitioner says that her Botox patients are typically women between the ages of 30 and 60, although she has a few male patients as well. She advises against Botox parties, where she would be leery of proper storage. Botox can last about six weeks when mixed with sterile saline but just a few hours if the saline is not sterile. She always recommends getting Botox injections from a reputable medical service provider, and encourages women to stay away from shady businesses offering Botox at discount prices.

Don’t want to try Botox? Happily, there are loads of other anti-aging options, including microdermabrasion, which involves buffing away a layer of skin. Microdermabrasion has the ability to minimize the appearance of fine lines and blemishes, leaving skin looking radiant.

Want to steer clear of medical spa services altogether? Don’t worry – you can still be proactive in the fight against wrinkles. The Kansas City Star article recommends skincare products that contain retinol, since retinol encourages cell renewal. Staying hydrated is also key to looking younger. Since our bodies are mainly comprised of water, drinking adequate water ensures that skin stays hydrated. Hydrated skin looks younger because it is plumper. Last but not least, beauty sleep is also essential for more youthful looking skin, so make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep a night!
