The laser only works on hairs that are in their active growing phase, which is when the hair is still connected to the root and contains the most color. Because your hairs do not all grow at the same time, multiple sessions are required to catch all of them in this active stage.

The laser targets the color (pigment) inside your hair shaft. The hair absorbs this laser energy and turns it into heat, which travels down to safely damage the deepest parts of the hair root (the bulb and the bulge) to stop it from growing. Because it requires hair color to work, it is not effective on red, blonde, grey, or white hair.

You must cleanly shave your back either the day before or the day of your appointment so the energy goes straight to the root cells. You must avoid direct UV sun exposure and ensure you have no tan or spray tan residue. Do not wax, pluck, or use hair removal creams. If you have tattoos, they must be pointed out and covered with a one-inch foam tape border.

You should feel a tolerable "pin prick" sensation while the laser is actively pulsing. A clinician knows the treatment is working well when they notice mild redness, slight swelling around the hair roots, a visible or audible hair singe, and a burnt hair smell.

Body treatments are scheduled every 6 to 8 weeks to allow the hair time to loop back into the active growing phase. However, since these cycles vary for everyone, you can come in sooner for your next session as long as you have visible hair regrowth.

Right after your session, you can apply Vaseline, aloe, or hydrocortisone, and you must stay out of the sun. For the first 24 hours, do not work out or sweat. Avoid extreme temperatures and do not swim or soak in pools, hot tubs, saunas, the ocean, or lakes. Take lukewarm showers with mild soap, do not scrub or exfoliate, and always use a broad-spectrum sunblock of at least SPF 30+. You can shave between visits, but do not wax, pluck, or use hair removal creams.
