Xeomin, a neurotoxin, works by temporarily attaching to nerve endings and blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that triggers your facial muscle contractions. The result is your facial muscles relax, and fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away. Because Xeomin contains no added proteins, unlike other products, people are far less likely to become resistant to it over time.

Xeomin effectively treats dynamic fine lines and wrinkles that don’t respond to dermabrasion or chemical peels. These are wrinkles that appear whenever you frown or make other facial expressions, such as squinting your eyes or smiling.

Because there’s no downtime associated with Xeomin, it easily fits into your active lifestyle. More invasive cosmetic procedures, such as chemical peels and dermabrasion, require up to 10 days of recovery time.

Xeomin acts fast. Since Xeomin doesn’t contain any additives, it bonds to facial muscles right away. Its effects can be seen in as little as one-to-seven days as Xeomin begins to settle in the injection site. And its effects can last three-to-four months. As your facial muscles start to contract again, you’ll need additional treatments.

FDA-approved, Xeomin is safe and effective for most everyone. People 18 and older may consider it. Younger people tend to see the best results. Older people should consult a plastic surgeon or dermatologist — sometimes their skin tone is not elastic enough to effectively respond to treatment.

You should not consider Xeomin if you:

    • Have static wrinkles caused by gravity or sun damage
    • Have allergies to botulinum toxin
    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Are taking antibiotics, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, or sleep medicine
    • Have been diagnosed with a neurological disorder

Rare side effects of Xeomin include dizziness, muscle weakness, headaches, and drooping eyelids.

Two weeks before receiving Xeomin injections, your physician will ask you to refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil supplements to decrease your risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Beforehand, you’ll receive a consultation to determine your particular needs. Your physician will apply a topical numbing gel to the injection site 15 minutes prior to your treatment.

The Xeomin treatment itself is quick and mostly free of discomfort. The whole procedure usually lasts under 30 minutes from start-to-finish. Your facial muscles will receive a series of injections. You might experience a few seconds of mild discomfort as Xeomin enters the treatment sites. These sites may look red and feel irritated for a few hours afterward.

After the procedure, your physician will ask you to frown, raise your eyebrows, smile, squint, and pucker your lips. This helps to speed up Xeomin absorption throughout the treatment sites. You’ll also be asked to remain upright for the first hour after treatment to prevent the Xeomin from spreading to nearby areas.

What’s more, during the first 24-to-48 hours after treatment, your physician will ask you to refrain from exercising, bending, lying down, and rubbing treated areas. This stops Xeomin from migrating to other areas, resulting in your face becoming paralyzed or your eyelids drooping.

Xeomin offers real, noticeable results. Most patients begin noticing effects between one-and-seven days after treatment. In 10 days they’ll look their best. After three-to-four months you’ll need another treatment.

Xeomin not only treats existing dynamic wrinkles, it can also prevent new ones from forming. This is especially true if you begin using Xeomin on wrinkles that haven’t quite set in yet. Repeated injections result in facial muscles becoming weaker over time, so you can go much longer between treatment sessions.
