The Cold Laser Facial Lowdown
It’s Getting Chilly in Here!
Cold laser facials are all the rage in Hollywood. Celebrities like Sharon Stone and Sting are big fans of this revolutionary new beauty treatment. Low-level laser therapy causes no redness, no skin damage, and no downtime. Sound too good to be true? Think again. The National Post gives us the scoop on this cool new treatment.
How does the cold laser get such great results? It’s a pretty complex process, and there’s no easy way to explain it. But we’ll try: Cold lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. This light is transmitted through the skin’s layers (the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range. Light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum. This promotes photo bio-stimulation, the process where a chain of chemical reactions is triggered by exposure to light. Primary photo-acceptors (which are activated by light) are located in the mitochondria and can convert light energy to electro-chemical energy. It is this energy that heals, repairs, builds collagen, increases cell turnover, and oxygenates the blood—and gives you an overall appearance of healthy skin.
Canadians Love the Cold Comfort of Cold Laser Facials
Canadians have cottoned to the cold laser craze. In Toronto the Freeze Clinic recently opened, offering clients a signature treatment that is designed as a series of complementary preparatory and rejuvenating procedures. The Clinic uses serums from Consonant, another Canadian company.
So what can you expect should you make an appointment at the Freeze Clinic? Nothing but luxury. The treatment starts with a microdermabrasion via a diamond-chip wand to gently remove the fine topmost layer of dead skin cells. A cold laser facial follows and is capped by a cool stream of high-pressure oxygen infusion and a misting of rosewater. Conductive gel is then applied, for the electrical microcurrent portion of the treatment, and facial muscles are stimulated and tightened in high-tech fashion. Finally, a collagen mask is applied under a LED panel of colored light beams. This multistep facial only costs $175 and is well worth it—as more than a few celebrities can attest.
The Freeze Clinic’s partners in New York and Los Angeles use the same innovative technology on clients. Kate Winslet, Christy Turlington, Anna Wintour, and Cate Blanchett have all undergone cold laser facials. For stars anticipating red carpet events, the Freeze Clinic recommends they plan ahead a few months, and take a course of six treatments—one every two weeks prior to the special event, since the effects are cumulative.
