Treatment Diary: Trying Out Potenza™ RF Microneedling

Learn why LaserAway’s new Potenza™ RF Microneedling can make such a big difference for your skin.

One thing to know about me is that I have pretty resilient skin. Another thing to know about me is that I have a real appetite for curiosity. This means I am always down to try out a skincare treatment. So when I found out that LaserAway was now offering Potenza™ RF Microneedling, I knew I had to try it! After reading my super helpful pre-treatment materials, I also did some light googling, but this admittedly left me a bit confused. The information was often contradictory and incomplete, so I was eager to try it out first person and experience everything this treatment had to offer firsthand.

Before I get into the details of what my treatment was like, let me share some background on Potenza™: As far as treatments go, radiofrequency microneedling (aka RFM) is fairly new technology. It sounds high-tech, but the truth is that the science behind is actually quite simple. Potenza™ RF Microneedling is effective because it combines two things: low-energy electromagnetic waves via radiofrequency and classic microneedling, which create small “controlled injuries” to encourage cellular turnover, as well as collagen production in the skin.

When applied together, through Potenza™ RF Microneedling, these treatments can have a game-changing impact on your skin, by penetrating and heating the deeper layers of your skin. In some ways, it’s fairly similar to Clear + Brilliant, which is another treatment I love, but it actually goes a bit deeper than that. After your treatment, you’ll discover that your skin feels firmer and appears smoother, with fewer visible imperfections. Some people see improvements after just one session, but 3-6 treatments are recommended for your best results. Anyway, back to my treatment diary…

After arriving at the LaserAway location in Brooklyn Heights, I was introduced to Amanda, the Registered Nurse who would be treating me that day. I loved how easy she was to talk to and how she answered my most annoying, nitty-gritting questions with ease. She asked me to sign consent forms, confirmed that I wasn’t pregnant or breastfeeding, and took some “before” photos. She also let me know that the treatment would take about 20-45 minutes.

Step 1: Cleanse

Amanda used a couple of LaserAway Beauty City Cloths to take off the sunscreen and concealer that I was already wearing. She also double-checked that I didn’t have any tattooed makeup or microbladed eyebrows.

Step 2: Numb

Next, she helped me apply numbing cream to my face. I can be a little sensitive to pain, so I knew I’d need a thick layer covering my entire face. We left it on my face for 25-30 minutes and then took it off with a wipe.

Step 3: Treatment

Amanda then applied the Potenza™ device—which looks like a combo of a toothbrush and a pen—all over my face. She moved from my forehead to my nose and then to my cheekbones, as the device carefully “stamped” my skin. Each “stamp” felt like a little zap, but in general, I didn’t feel any pain. Because I was treating the entirety of my face, the treatment took up the full 45-minute slot. When Amanda finished my treatment, I noticed I was a little flushed—but not so red that I felt embarrassed to go about my day as I normally would.

Step 5: Hydrate

Finally, Amanda soothed my skin with a rush of hydration, thanks to a LaserAway Beauty Jetsetter Hydroserum face mask. This helped keep my inflammation under control while minimizing recovery time.

In conclusion: Am I a fan of Potenza™ RF Microneedling again? Definitely. But I’m also super eager to see the results that come from multiple treatments. This treatment was comfortable, effective, and made my skin feel totally reinvigorated.
