WORRIED ABOUT WRINKLES?

Everyone gets wrinkles at some point in their life. It’s inevitable. But what are wrinkles? They’re nothing more than lines that form in the skin, and they are part of the normal aging process. In order to understand the various treatments for wrinkles, it’s crucial to understand the two main types of wrinkles – dynamic and static.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the repeated contraction of underlying muscles, such as when we smile or squint. They can also be caused by habitual movements. (You’ve probably seen vertical lip lines in smokers.) Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are caused by gravity, the loss of fat and collagen, and the loss of elasticity. You can see them regardless of muscle action; they are always present. Dynamic wrinkles eventually become static wrinkles.

Fighting the Good Fight

A plethora of treatments exist for static wrinkles: creams, chemical peels, Botox injections, fillers, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing—you name it. The right choice for each person is based on the severity of his or her wrinkles, personal preferences, and goals. News-press.com gives us the scoop. Let’s take a closer look at each kind of treatment:

Creams

Effective topical creams contain some form of retinoic acid that helps reduce wrinkles. Retin A causes skin cells to turn over at a faster rate, which reduces pore size and smooths skin. Topical wrinkle creams also build collagen to help replace what is lost. Topical Retin A is a prescription product that comes in a number of different strengths. And you can find weaker varieties in drugstores. The vitamin A derivatives have a more gentle effect and are present in a number of over-the-counter products.

Botox

Botox injections are effective for dynamic wrinkles, like forehead lines, smoker’s lines and crow’s feet. Botox weakens the muscle, causing it to relax. This removes the dynamic wrinkle. Botox’s results tend to last up to six months. With repeated uses, Botox can diminish the appearance of dynamic wrinkles permanently. Dermal fillers can be effective for static wrinkles, replacing lost volume and re-plumping tissue.

Chemical Peels

Removing skin layers can be helpful in regaining smoother, more youthful skin. This can be accomplished with a number of tools. Chemical peels are one such tool. Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin and cause regeneration of new skin and the collagen underneath. They are best used in mild to moderate wrinkling, and the strength of the peel can be adjusted.

Laser Resurfacing

Lasers are used to treat moderate to severe wrinkling. Both non-ablative and ablative lasers can be used, either together or separately. The non-ablative lasers work by heating the lower layers of the skin and stimulating collagen. The collagen then plumps the skin and eliminates the wrinkles. Ablative-laser treatments—such as fractional, erbium, or CO2 lasers—work by dissolving skin and replacing it with new, fresh skin. The ablative laser treatments do require recovery time but are the most effective in reversing more severe sun damage and wrinkling.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a procedure that essentially sands the skin down to encourage the growth of new, smoother skin to replace the damaged skin. Dermabrasion is ideal for deep wrinkles and age spots. Seven to ten days of recovery time is usually needed for skin to heal after a dermabrasion treatment.
