  • Q & A: HARD WAXING

Question: I’ve just heard about a new hair removal technique called hard waxing. Is it better than laser hair removal?

Short answer? No. Hard wax is a type of wax used for hair removal. It’s applied and removed differently from the more common soft wax, but it still removes hair from the follicle.

A Different Type of Wax Altogether

How is hard wax different from the more conventional soft wax?

    • It doesn’t require a muslin or pellon strip to be removed.
    • It’s applied thicker than soft wax and tends to be about the thickness of a nickel.
    • It needs to be heated up before applying to the skin. It’s usually warmed up at a lower temperature than soft wax.
    • It needs to harden fully before being removed, otherwise, it will crack or won’t remove hair.
    • It shrinks wraps the hair as it hardens.
    • It’s known to be able to remove shorter hairs than soft wax.

Hard wax is usually used around the bikini area and on the nose. It is not ideal for removing hair from large areas. In both the short and the long run, it is not a good substitute for laser hair removal. Why? Only laser hair removal can free you from the tedious routine of waxing and shaving. Plus, it has many more benefits:

    • It’s non-invasive and non-surgical.
    • It selectively targets dark, coarse hairs while leaving surrounding skin undamaged.
    • It’s fast – each laser pulse takes only a fraction of a second.
    • It results in softer, smoother skin.
    • It can effectively target large areas of hair.

Even compared to other permanent hair removal techniques such as electrolysis, laser hair removal is faster, gentler and safer. The facts say it all: Electrolysis works by inserting a sterile needle into every hair follicle, which then destroys the follicles with a low-level electrical current. Ouch! Because electrolysis focuses on one hair at a time, it’s a painful and tedious process, meaning it is best reserved for small areas of hair. If you want to remove larger areas of hair you’ll have to undergo laser hair removal, which can permanently and effectively do the job.

Have You Ever Wondered How the Laser Works Its Magic?

Laser hair removal seems like magic, right? But it’s just science, pure and simple. Laser hair removal uses laser light pulses that selectively destroy hair follicles by targeting the melanin in them. The follicle’s pigment absorbs the laser’s light pulse, damaging the follicle enough to significantly slow down hair regrowth. Since the lasers target melanin, coarse, dark hair and light skin combinations tend to respond best to treatment.

Clients with darker hair and darker skin and lighter hair and lighter skin combinations can still achieve desirable results with the Nd:YAG laser. The Nd:YAG laser has a longer wavelength and better pigment selectivity than other lasers used for hair removal, meaning that it can penetrate hair follicles more precisely, leaving the surrounding skin tissue undamaged.

So Just Toss That Wax, Girl!

There’s no question that laser hair removal works. It’s the preferred way to remove hair because it’s safer and more permanent than other methods such as waxing, plucking, shaving, and electrolysis. Laser hair removal is so effective that most clients experience permanent hair loss after an average of three to five sessions. But you’ll have to undergo multiple laser hair removal sessions to obtain maximum results because only hair in the anagen—or active—stage of hair growth can be successfully treated.

What’s more, laser hair removal is the only proven method available for easily and painlessly removing hair from large areas of the body, including the back, chest, legs, and face.
