  • BOTOX OR DYSPORT?

The brand name Botox is indistinguishable from its product. You could even say that Botox has enjoyed somewhat of a monopoly. But abclocal.go.com brings us news that things are about to get more competitive.

Turns out that Botox’s competitor Dysport appears to have the edge in smoothing out wrinkles. In a recent study, participants had one side of their face injected with Dysport and the other with Botox. Dysport proved superior at reducing signs of crow’s feet wrinkles when participants contracted their facial muscles as much as they could. Two-thirds of the participants also preferred the results on the side of the face treated with Dysport.

Both Botox and Dysport use botulinum toxin to relax the underlying muscles that cause wrinkles. So what’s the difference between the two products? For one, the Dysport protein is slightly smaller than the one Botox uses, so it works quicker by one or two days. Dosing for Dysport is also different than Botox, so your physician should be experienced in administering the substance. Botox and Dysport may last about the same amount of time—although some physicians claim that Dysport lasts a bit longer.

What’s more, individuals who have developed a resistance to Botox, usually after repeated treatments, may respond well to Dysport. Dysport also diffuses more thoroughly from the injection site than Botox, allowing physicians to treat broader areas, such as the forehead and underarms with fewer needle sticks. But for tighter, narrower areas such as under the eyes or eyebrows, Botox should be used. Finally, Dysport is significantly cheaper than Botox. The cost of Dysport is about 5-10% less than Botox; it runs between $4 and $5 per unit.

The beneficial effects of both Botox and Dysport can be prolonged–sometimes for quite some time longer than the ordinary four to six-month duration. How? By having patients undergo a series of three to four initial treatments, spaced four months apart. The constant presence of Botox or Dysport in the muscle over an extended period of time trains it to not contract as much as before, resulting in the appearance of significantly fewer dynamic wrinkles.

Regardless of whether you choose Botox or Dysport, you should always have an experienced physician administer the treatments to avoid significant side effects. There’s a reason over 11 million Americans choose these innovative anti-aging procedures – they’re safe, effective, and minimally invasive.
