How To Get Rid Of Cystic Acne WIth Laser Treatments
Suffer from cystic acne? Unfortunately, it’s one of the worst types of acne you can have. If you’re plagued by it, chances are you have large, red, and painful breakouts deep in your skin. Don’t worry, though; these breakouts can be treated.
Don’t try to wait to get help. Cystic acne can linger for years. It can affect large areas of your skin and leave permanent scars.
The Lowdown on Cystic Acne
What is cystic acne? And how does it form? Acne, in general, occurs when your pores get clogged, usually with oil and dead skin cells. Sometimes bacteria get trapped inside the clogged pores too and causes the area to become red and swollen. Cystic acne happens when this infection goes deep into your skin, creating a red, tender bump that’s full of pus. It may hurt or itch. If a cyst bursts, the infection can spread, causing more breakouts.
How can cystic acne be treated? Oral contraceptives, Accutane and antibiotics are generally first prescribed to fight the infection:
- Oral antibiotics, a mainstay of therapy for severe acne, work to reduce the P. acnes bacteria in the skin, which then decreases inflammation. Treatment with oral antibiotics usually beings with a high dose, which is reduced as the acne resolves itself.
- Oral contraceptives, in the case of female acne, have been shown to effectively clear acne by suppressing the overactive sebaceous glands. Oral contraceptives can be used as a long-term acne therapy, and they’re sometimes used in conjunction with oral antibiotics.
- Accutane, a powerful prescription drug that is derived from vitamin A, is prescribed to treat severe acne only after other treatments have failed. It works by unclogging skin pores and shrinking oil glands. It is very effective for controlling most types of acne and for clearing it up for long periods of time.
The Most Effective Laser Treatments For Acne
In addition to taking prescription birth control and antibiotics, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photo facials have proven to be highly effective. IPL photo facials use a broad spectrum of light to target melanin (the pigmented cells forming sunspots and pigmentation after acne lesions) and hemoglobin (the red cells that are found in blood vessels and redness that remains after acne lesions). IPL photo facials also destroy bacteria associated with acne, and they shrink the sebaceous glands to stop the overproduction of oils that cause acne. Red and brown marks from acne lesions on the skin can be greatly reduced after a series of three to four IPL treatments. The treatments should be spaced three to five weeks apart.
Once you get your cystic acne under control, you can then start to take care of any resulting scarring. There are loads of affordable, non-invasive med spa treatments to help erase even the worst kind of cystic acne scarring:
Clear + Brilliant
Clear + Brilliant’s non-invasive laser technology gently resurfaces the top layer of the dermis by creating millions of microscopic treatment zones in the skin. This not only stimulates collagen production but also encourage the skin to create healthier tissue. The result? Facial scars and discoloration fade away!
The treatment itself is simple. Each Clear + Brilliant procedure takes about thirty minutes. A topical numbing agent is applied to the face forty minutes prior to the procedure. This is removed right before treatment begins. The actual laser session lasts a quick ten minutes, and most patients experience only a warm tingling or prickling sensation with little or no discomfort. To ensure proper contact with the skin and uniform application to all treated areas, Clear + Brilliant technology uses a patented intelligent Optimal Tracking System. Directly after the Clear + Brilliant laser treatment, a cooling face mask is placed on the treated area for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce any residual sensation of heat.
Clear + Brilliant is clinically proven to significantly reduce the appearance of acne scars and discoloration by up to 80 percent. In fact, almost all clients who underwent our Clear + Brilliant procedure claimed their acne scars felt and looked smoother, and that their skin had a noticeable glow after a series of three to five treatments. In addition to fading scars, Clear + Brilliant significantly reduces the size of pores and refreshes skin tone and texture. Even after one treatment, you’ll notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your acne scars. Within a week, you’ll notice smoother skin texture and more even skin tone.
Surprisingly, Botox can aid in wound healing, meaning it can work wonders for cases of cystic acne. According to a recent study by the May Clinic, Botox helped facial wounds heal with minimal scarring. How? Because wide scars are the result of the local muscles pulling the wound apart during the healing phase, Botox temporarily weakens the surrounding muscles, lessening the pull on the wound during the acute healing phase.
How does Botox work? Botox is a neurotoxin and works by attaching itself to nerve endings. Once this happens, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions, called acetylcholine, can’t be released. To put it more simply, Botox injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles.
The best part about undergoing Botox is that it’s quick and painless. You’ll generally receive a consultation beforehand to determine the best treatment for your needs. And when you do undergo treatment, a topical numbing gel will be applied fifteen minutes prior. Six to eight injections will be administered into the underlying muscles. Most people say that the injections feel similar to getting vaccinated – that is, they feel only a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site. A few hours afterward, the injection site may look red and feel irritated.
Since Botox works by weakening facial muscles, full results are generally seen within five to seven days. Your acne scarring will be significantly reduced, especially if Botox is used directly after your wound closes. Your results will continue to improve, until about two weeks after the procedure. The effects of Botox will gradually wear off over the next four to six months, and the scar may need to retreat.
Juvéderm is a smooth gel filler that fillers in pitted or depressed acne scars. Juvéderm is so powerful that its results last up to a year—and after only a single treatment. Because Juvéderm’s dermal gel is smooth rather than granular, a single injection of it makes skin looks smooth, natural and youthful. This is because the unique formulation of Juvéderm’s gel promotes hydration of the skin as well as restores volume to the skin and its underlying structures.
What happens exactly during a Juvéderm procedure? Before applying the Juvéderm injections, the physician will mark strategic points on your face as guides to the appropriate injection sites for the filler. Then he or she will clean the injection sites with antibacterial soap and administer a topical anesthetic to numb the area. The actual injections take only a few minutes. Afterward, the physician will clean all the marks and apply an ice pack to the treatment site. It’s important that you don’t apply pressure to the treated areas as this could result in the displacement of the Juvéderm filler.
Although results can be seen immediately with Juvéderm, most people see their most impressive results three to five days after injection, as swelling and bruising disappear. Juvederm is most effective on depressed acne scars, especially ice pick ones.
