How to Create the Ultimate On-the-Go Fitness Plan

  1. Pack your sneakers. The beauty of getting outdoors is that it doesn’t matter where you are. All you basically need is a pair of sneakers. Then you can walk, hike, or run in practically any location. Try to get a 30-minute walk in each day, which can speed up your metabolism and really get your blood pumping. Consider also checking out local trails near your neighborhood for a quick hike before or after work.
  2. Use your body weight. Can’t make it to the gym? Well, you’ve got an excellent piece of equipment you can use any time – your own body! Your body can provide excellent resistance to help build muscle strength. Some great exercises you can do include push-ups, tricep dips, squats, lunges and planks.
  3. Exercise while you work. Raise your activity level and productivity with neck rolls or arm raises. Push hands out to the side and then up toward the ceiling. Take a brisk walk during your break. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Consider creating a desk gym. A jump rope, a stability ball, exercise bands, and dumbbells don’t cost much or take up much room.
  4. Wake up a little earlier. Start by setting your alarm clock just five minutes earlier. Do stretches and jumping jacks before getting in the shower, or follow a short exercise DVD.
  5. Sneak in a lunch break workout. Make use of your precious 60 minutes by hitting the gym or going for a walk. Not only will it keep your waistline in check, you’re also proven to be more productive during the day by logging off for an hour than you would be by eating lunch at your desk.
  6. Multitask on the treadmill. Save time at the gym by hopping on the treadmill holding a three to five pound dumbbell in each hand, and set the speed to a brisk walk. Do a one-minute set each of shoulder presses, biceps curls, triceps extensions, side laterals, front laterals, and standing triceps kickbacks one after another as you walk. It’s an amazing upper-body challenge that also gets your heart pumping. Do this series two or three times each week. As you improve, work up to doing four-minute sets.
  7. Don’t be a couch potato. While you’re vegging out before the TV, do some push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and squats. Clear some space between the couch and the TV so you don’t miss anything while breaking a sweat. Need an extra nudge? Move your dumbbells, jump rope, and other fitness tools near the tube to give yourself visible reminders.
  8. Power up your stair climbs. Instead of walking leisurely up a flight of stairs, gradually increase your speed and the number of stairs you take in one minute. Take two steps at once, if you’re able to do it safely, and you’ll target your glutes even more.
  9. Tackle high energy items. Find the high-energy items on your to-do list and tackle these when you need physical activity. Think about washing the car, digging the garden, mowing the lawn, reorganizing a closet, or doing some spring cleaning.
  10. Take the kids with you. While they’re playing, you can walk around the playground or jump rope nearby. During their games or sports practices, walk briskly around the field. You can also go biking with your kids, put up a badminton net in your yard, sign up as a family for fun runs or just walk around the neighborhood with your children. When the weather’s bad, try active video games like Dance Dance Revolution.
