Can You Swim After Laser Tattoo Removal?

Swimming After Laser Tattoo Removal: What Every Patient Needs to Know

Laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective way to clear unwanted ink—whether you’re saying goodbye to a design that no longer fits or making room for something new. At LaserAway, we use state-of-the-art laser technology to deliver outstanding results with minimal downtime. That said, the treatment does create controlled injury to the skin, which means proper aftercare is essential for healing.

One of the most frequently asked questions we hear from patients is: “Can I swim after my laser tattoo removal session?” Here’s what you need to know to protect your skin, stay on track with your treatment plan, and avoid unnecessary setbacks.

Why You’ll Need to Wait Before Swimming

After laser tattoo removal, the treated skin is more vulnerable to irritation and infection. Whether it’s a pool, hot tub, ocean, lake, or even a bath, soaking in water exposes healing skin to bacteria and other microorganisms that can compromise your results and delay the healing process.

That’s why we recommend waiting at least 72 hours after your treatment before swimming or soaking. This gives your skin time to begin healing and reduces the risk of complications like scabbing, blistering, or infection.

When you do resume bathing, stick to cool or lukewarm water, use a gentle cleanser, and always pat the skin dry with a clean, soft towel. Avoid hot water and steam, as these can inflame the skin and slow recovery.

What Happens During Laser Tattoo Removal?

Our advanced laser systems use concentrated pulses of light to break up tattoo ink beneath the skin’s surface. The ink is gradually absorbed and flushed out by your body’s immune system over a series of sessions.

Treatment is quick and minimally-invasive, with most patients describing the sensation as similar to a rubber band snap. Mild swelling, redness, and blistering are common and expected as your skin heals—especially in the first 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. That’s why giving your skin time to recover is so important.

What to Do After Your Session: Post-Care Basics

Your skin needs time to regenerate after each treatment—and following our aftercare guidelines helps ensure your skin heals properly and ink fades as expected.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Keep the area clean and dry. Gently cleanse with mild soap and water starting 24 hours after treatment. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing.

  • Cool the area if needed. Apply cold compresses for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce discomfort.

  • Avoid heat and friction. Skip hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, and tight clothing for at least 72 hours.

  • Don’t pick or pop. If blistering or scabbing occurs, let it heal naturally to avoid scarring or pigmentation changes.

  • Skip sun exposure. Keep the area covered and protected with SPF 50+ for at least two weeks after treatment.

  • Watch for signs of infection. If you notice excessive redness, pus, or discomfort, contact us.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Taking a few simple steps before your appointment helps make the experience more comfortable and ensures your skin is ready for treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure for two weeks prior. We can’t treat sunburned or recently tanned skin.

  • Don’t apply any products to the area on the day of your session—including lotion, deodorant, or makeup.

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce friction post-treatment.

  • Eat a light meal beforehand to avoid lightheadedness during your session.

  • Tell your provider about any medications or supplements you’re taking.

What to Expect as You Heal

Laser tattoo removal is a gradual process. While some fading is visible after just one session, multiple treatments are typically required—usually spaced about 6 to 8 weeks apart—for complete removal. The number of sessions you’ll need depends on factors like ink color, tattoo depth, age, and your body’s individual response.

You may experience redness, blistering, or scabbing during the healing process. This is completely normal. Staying hydrated, protecting the area from the sun, and avoiding premature exposure to water (including pools and baths) all contribute to a smoother, faster recovery.

Your Best Results Start with the Right Care

At LaserAway, we want every patient to feel confident and supported throughout their laser tattoo removal journey. Following our pre- and post-care instructions—including holding off on swimming for at least three days—is key to achieving the best possible results.
